Nick Joaquin's final play titled Pinoy Agonistes: A History in Two Epochalities, a three-part drama first published in the Philippine Graphic (June 2000) follows the Galang family across the Martial Law years, dreaming of building "the first Filipino car.βΒ
Set in the sala, with good humor, with martinis, with occasional blackouts, with occasional water access, and an upper middle class taste, the family is in constant agony for the country's struggle for identity. Joaquinβs Pinoy Agonistes asks audiences to listen closely to how a family talks itself into complicity β and, eventually, out of it.
Produced by the UP Cebu Library, Martial Law Literary Corner, Dr. Marie Rose Arong, and the cast and volunteers, the play performed by Cebuano theater actors, directed for the stage, and offered free to the public as a one-day-only event for educational purposes with no commercial gain intended.
